• Elpidio Reyna, 42, of Compton, Calif., was sentenced Sept. 11 to three years in federal prison for assaulting a federal officer during a June 7, 2025, protest against an immigration enforcement operation near a Home Depot in Paramount. Reyna pleaded guilty Feb. 17 to assault on a federal officer with a deadly or dangerous weapon resulting in bodily injury.
  • According to his plea agreement, Reyna set objects on fire in the street and threw rocks at a convoy carrying U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. One rock struck a government vehicle, shattering glass that cut an officer’s forehead. Prosecutors said Reyna described his actions as “sudden and emotional and fueled by alcohol” and stemming from anger over U.S. immigration policy.
  • After the FBI released images of the suspected assailant, investigators identified Reyna but were unable to locate him and determined he had fled to Mexico, according to the FBI. Mexican authorities initially detained him in Sinaloa, and after a negotiated surrender, FBI agents arrested him July 23, 2025, at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego. He had remained in federal custody since then.
