- Hundreds of anti-ICE protesters gathered outside NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital in New York City on Oct. 8 after federal immigration agents shot and wounded Oscar Belgal, 28, during an attempted arrest in the Bronx. The Department of Homeland Security alleged that Belgal, a Dominican national, had ties to the Trinitarios gang. He was shot in the neck and was expected to survive.
- Video showed protesters pushing metal barricades against NYPD officers, shouting “our streets” and, at one point, raising barricades over an officer’s head. The confrontation followed the shooting, which occurred while a 5-year-old boy, believed to be Belgal’s son, was sitting in the back of his SUV.
- Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic Socialists of America congressional candidate endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, was filmed confronting officers and accusing them of escalating the situation. Chevalier later said an officer pushed her to the ground while she was trying to de-escalate tensions. She called for disbanding the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group and for Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to resign.
