Ziheng “Tony” Fang, 30, of San Jose, Calif., was arrested on a federal charge of false information and hoaxes after investigators alleged he placed hateful and threatening messages in restrooms at San Jose State University. Fang, a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in data science, made his initial appearance in federal court July 10.
According to the criminal complaint, one message discovered Nov. 5, 2025, began with “!WARNING! MASS BOMB NEXT WEEK,” displayed multiple swastikas, and was accompanied by additional threats. Prosecutors said Fang’s fingerprint was found on the message and that investigators linked him to more than 20 hateful or threatening incidents reported on campus between October 2024 and May 2026 through key-card access records and surveillance footage.
Court documents state the repeated threats prompted campuswide emergency alerts, caused professors to cancel or move classes online, and left some campus buildings nearly empty on the dates attacks were allegedly threatened.
