In the wake of the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the hands of the Saudis in their consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, Clarion Project’s National Security Analyst Ryan Mauro weighs how Turkey leveraged the Khashoggi affair to promote the Muslim Brotherhood and Turkey as the leader of the Sunni Muslim world.
Mauro relates one of the most under-reported and significant details of the entire affair: how Turkish President Erdogan brought international Muslim Brotherhood leaders to Turkey — including the organization’s spiritual leader, extremist imam Yusuf al-Qaradawi — for a big event at which Qaradawi essentially made the case that Turkey should be the seat of the new Islamic caliphate and how Saudi Arabia contributed to the “war on Islam” and is thus apostate. This was akin to declaring jihad against Saudi Arabia.
