Details emerged about an attack planned by an ISIS supporter from Maryland. Mohamed Yousef Elshinawy, 32, pleaded guilty (on a plea bargain) last year to taking close to $9,000 to ISIS to carry out a terrorist attack in the U.S. ISIS operatives gave Elshinawy the option of assassinating a Texas businessman or detonating a bomb designed to inflict mass casualties. He chose the latter, received videos from ISIS as to how to build the bomb and researched federal buildings in Baltimore as possible targets. Read more details here

A man from the Bronx, New York who was arrested and held without bail on terrorism charges smiled and laughed his way through his recent court appearance. Sajmir Alimehmeti, 24, was charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS and making a false statement on an application for a U.S. passport. Investigators say Alimehmeti, a native of Albania who also went by the name Andul Qawii, enjoyed watching beheading videos to get “motivated” while exercising. They also charge that he had tried to join the Islamic State since 2014. While in prison, he received “terrorist propaganda” from Ahmad Rahimi, convicted of setting off bombs in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Read more details here

An Indian-American man from Virginia who converted to Islam pleaded guilty to making materially false statements on an application to join the military. Shivam Patel, 27, of Williamsburg became “obsessed with Islam,” according to his parents. Patel traveled to Jordan where he was arrested. With his parent’s permission, the FBI searched his room and computer where they found evidence he researched how to beat a polygraph test, downloaded copies of an ISIS online magazine and searched for how to join the group.
