Seemingly, Dr Ahmed is a breath of fresh air and reasonableness — nay, sanity — in the otherwise biased, tyrannical world of Muslim politics, thought and culture. However, I fear it is purely her own wishful thinking about Islam that she nurtures.
Ahmed makes many assertions about Islam that are simply flat out incorrect. For example, she says, "Our faith always centered on pluralism, deep reverence for other monotheisms and an acknowledgement of our beliefs as Muslims to have been informed by the believers preceding Islam, as the Quran explicitly acknowledges."
The Quran, spends 61 percent of it's entirety on what to do with and to the kaffirs [non-Muslims]. And it's not about understanding their contributions of other believers. Islam, Mohammed and all the hadith and sira [sayings and biogrphies of Mohammed] after the "average" Quran, simply express the '"Jihad" and it's eternal declarations to submit and or destroy those who don't submit. That is clear and more than specific.
If Islam and Muslim societies hadn't been given oppressed nations status, given the right to throttle the world with oil, then they wouldn't have taken Jihad around the globe, specifically to the West, for the purposes of destroying all non-Muslim societies.
Dr Ahmed is from the tiny, tiny minority of those who reason by ignoring the Quran and pretend it never happened or has no weight, when the entirety of Islam, and all it's legal systems, command that it abrogates all the Meccan suras that came before it.
It is good to hear from a person who has no hatred of others. But it's not the commandment of Islam, nor of Mohammed. And for non-Muslims to pretend that her version of Islam — a version not supported by any of the legal schools of Islam, nor of any of the cultures of Islam that survived to this day — has any weight beyond her wishful thinking is more than dangerous.
Dr. Ahmed would be killed in "moderate" Indonesia, where the Ahmadiya Muslims were slaughtered last year, for her thoughts. She would be run out of Egypt, Lebanon and out of every Muslim country. Irshad Manji wrote books like this, and she has been banned in "moderate" Malaysia — that most successful Muslim country in the world, where Islam is continuing to tyrannize Christians, Buddhists and anyone who speaks against the hegemony of Sharia law.
Sharia Law — the Jihad of Islam currently attempting to supersede Western freedoms and liberties — is hardly understood by casting Dr Ahmed's private, reasonable and decent version of Islam as "the real" Islam. It isn't. Not anywhere. Nor is it accepted anywhere, except in the appeasing confines of Western thought, where ignoring the deadly effects of Sharia desperately needs such avenues in order to pretend there is no vast and immediate problem from Sharia and Islam.
