The vast majority of deradicalization programs in the UK are not working, according to a study from the government.
Here at Clarion we invite you to help us build an alternative system that we believe can act as a more successful model to prevent extremism. See below for details.
The UK’s Behavioural Insights Team looked at 33 programs across the UK and found:
- One program treated white and Muslim youngsters in exactly the same way
- Some participants said freedom of speech was restricted
- Facilitators were uncomfortable dealing with sensitive topics
- Some were afraid to raise the issues of race and religion with participants
So What’s the Alternative?
Clarion believes attempts at deradicalization are of course important but the bottom line is they are a case of someone bolting the stable door when it’s arguably too late.
Right now, we are in the final stages of creating a program of PREVENTING violent extremism BEFORE it takes root in our young people. As we’ve previously explained, children can tend towards extremism for a variety of reasons and they don’t have to be overly exposed to radical Islam in the first place in order to become tomorrow’s terrorists.
It can be your kid or mine.
In the next few weeks we’ll be launching a series of webinars telling you how to spot signs of radicalization among young people you know. We’ll also be working behind the scenes with people in places of authority – educators, law enforcement and more.
Right now we’re looking for initial participants in our focus-group webinars as we slowly and carefully roll out this program.
