The Philippine terrorist group Abu Sayyaf beheaded Canadian hostage Robert Hall after repeatedly threatening to do so. Hall was kidnapped in September alongside another Canadian John Ridsdel, Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad and Filipino Marites Flor.

Ridsdel was killed in April after a multi-million dollar ransom demand was not met.

"This latest heinous crime serves to strengthen our government's resolve to put an end to this reign of terror and banditry," Philippines President Benigno Aquino said in a statement in which he confirmed the killing had taken place.

Abu Sayyaf is continuing an Islamist uprising against the government of the Philippines seeking to create an Islamist State there. Recently they focused mostly on kidnappings and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in February 2016.
