Old tweets show Michigan Lieutenant Governor candidate Garlin Gilchrist legitimizes Hamas while demonstrating shockingly tone-deaf vulgarity toward sensitive geopolitical issues.

Michigan Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer chose Garlin Gilchrist II to be her running mate. Gilchrist, a self-described “nonprofit leader”* and “political organizer,” who has never held public office before, recently ran a failed campaign to serve as Detroit City Clerk.

Recently, Gilchrist has been coming under fire over past Twitter posts in which he calls the terror group Hamas a “legitimately elected party” and criticizes those who support Israel.

Whitmer has also come under scrutiny for her views on Israel after reports highlighted that during a town hall event, Whitmer avoided taking a stance on the Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement that seeks to destroy Israel and has ties to terrorism.

Following these controversies, the Whitmer campaign posted that both Whitmer and Gilchrist hold “firm opposition” to BDS and express their “unwavering support for Israel.”  The message continues by describing the controversies as a “baseless attacks” by Republicans.  However, the tweets by Gilchrist prove that the campaign message of “unwavering support” is simply a lie.

The Whitmer message opposing BDS is no longer available at the campaign website.  A Google cache version is still available.

*[Full Disclosure:  Both Garlin Gilchrist and I have been involved in the past with the nonprofit group, Detroit Nation and we have had personal interactions with each other.  My recollection of interacting with him, in order to plan events, is that it was difficult to get a commitment from him to attend planning meetings.]
