Imam Zaid Shakir is one of the most prominent US imams. He was born Ricky D. Mitchell in 1956 in Berkeley, California. He converted to Islam in 1977 while in the U.S. Air Force. In 2010, Shakir co-founded  Zaytuna College with Sheikh Hamza Yusuf, another prominent American Muslim convert, and Hatem Bazian, chairman of American Muslims for Palestine.
