The people of Gaza “protested” on May 14 along the border fence with Israel. Gaza’s 1.5-2 million people repeatedly say they want freedom from the shackles of oppression. Here’s how they can get it:
When the internationally-recognized terror organization Hamas asks you to protest against Israel in a March of Return, know that you are being used by Hamas leaders as political pawns and (sometimes) unarmed combatants in a war that isn’t yours. Hamas is perfectly prepared for you and your young children to be martyrs, while its leaders remain in their fancy homes and offices far from the front lines. Indeed, the Hamas-controlled media is filled with videos and statements urging you to risk your lives for the cause.
Don’t send your children to Hamas summer camps where they learn to be “just like the real soldiers of Hamas.” Jumping through hoops of fire and completing assault courses while carrying a fake or real gun may sound like an exciting few weeks under the scorching sun. But I wouldn’t want my child doing that. Sure Hamas gives incentives – after all, its founders set up the entire terror organization as a welfare “charity” doling out food to the needy. But that only serves to emphasize just how evil Hamas really is. That is Hamas’ strategy? Win the hearts and minds of Gazan families and then encourage them lose everything “for the cause.”
Reject extremism in all its forms. Don’t allow your families to watch the hate-filled filth Hamas puts on your TV screens. Avoid (if possible) firebrand preachers in mosques near you. Teach your kids at home that the Hamas school textbooks and curricula are filled with lies and incitement. Try to find like-mined friends who also believe in a future free from hate.
Understand that the people Hamas tell you are the enemy are anything but. The Israelis are one of the most peace-loving people on earth. All they strive for is to rear their children in a society free from hate and filled with respect for the other. Remember those days BEFORE Hamas was in power, when Israelis freely entered Gaza to shop in your markets and helped create a vibrant economy for you. Remember the friendly conversations you had, remember the jobs Israeli businesses created for you. Tens of thousands of you worked in Israel every day and went home proud at night after a job done well, knowing you would get a decent paycheck that could support your entire family. Remember how Hamas deliberately fired rockets at the Erez industrial estate where many more of you worked for Israeli companies, until Israel had no choice but to close it down.
Know that the enemy is not across the border fence but in the seats of government in the Gaza Strip. Why is it that elections are hardly ever held? Why is it that your women are forced to lead restricted lives? Why does much of the hundreds of millions of dollars that pours into Gaza every year never make it into the hands of the people? Why are businesses often restricted in what they can and cannot do, unlike those thriving in the West?
Here’s what you have to do to end the misery in your lives: Stop believing Hamas incitement and lies. Educate your children to love, not hate. Start a call for regime change and a true democracy in the Gaza Strip. Once that happens, you can be assured there will only be truly free, good times ahead.
