A 26-year-old student from Lebanon is being held without bail in Australia for 25 counts of sexual intercourse with a minor.

The man was living with a 12-year old girl he had "married" in a sharia ceremony arranged by the girl's father, a 62-year old convert to Islam. According to police documents, the girl was told that sharia law superseded Australian law.

The man admitted to having sex daily with the girl, but when questioned on this he showed no remorse and was confident that in doing this he had committed no crime," police documents say.

The father told police detectives he was "shocked" at being arrested, and said he saw nothing wrong with the union. He has been charged with procuring a child for sex and an accessory before the fact to sexual intercourse with a child.

The marriage came to the police's attention when the girl's "husband" tried to register her for school and applied for legal guardianship.

The girl's mother is believed to not have had any knowledge of the the marriage as the parents are separated. The girl and her eight-year old sister have been placed in foster care.

Australia has revoked the "husband's" student visa.
