The Association of Muslim Social Scientists of North America (AMSS) says it was founded “by Muslim scholars with the mission to organize conferences that examine, debate and define Muslim perspectives on social issues of global concern.” It is located in the same building as the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) and the Association of Muslim Scientists and Engineers.
The AMSS website states that it originated from the Muslim Students Association. The website states that those who founded it and the Muslim Students Association “were also instrumental in establishing” the Islamic Medical Association of North America, the Association of Muslim Scientists and Engineers, IIIT and the Islamic Society of North America.
Every single one of those groups, including AMSS, is listed in a 1991 U.S. Muslim Brotherhood memo as among “our organizations and the organizations of our friends.” The document states the Brotherhood’s “work in America is a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within.”
The AMSS’s American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences has been jointly published with IIIT since it began in 1984.
One of the founders of AMSS is Jamal Barzinji. He is also the IIIT Vice President for Research and Publications. FBI documents from 1988 reported that he had been identified as a Muslim Brotherhood operative. In 2003, his home was raided because, in the words of U.S. Customs Service Special Agent David Kane, Barzinji “is not only closely associated with PIJ [Palestinian Islamic Jihad]…but also with Hamas.” In 2011, it was reported that the Justice Department stopped a planned indictment of Barzinji. Barzinji played a leading role in establishing multiple U.S. Brotherhood entities.
AMSS member Abubaker Ahmed Al-Shingieti is the Regional Director of IIIT. He previously served as the editor of the Islamic Society of North America’s publication, Islamic Horizons. He has a long history with the government of Sudan, listed by the State Department as a state sponsor of terrorism. He was the councilor at the Sudanese embassy in Washington D.C. from 1990 to 1993. He then became the Secretary-General of the External Information Council in Khartoum until 1995, when he became the Director of Political Affairs for President Omar Bashir until 1998.
On September 24, 2012, Al-Shingieti and IIIT co-founder and Finance Director Hisham Altalib met with Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. IIIT’s website says that Morsi “welcomed the participation of IIIT in the reform of higher education in Egypt.”
Former imam and International Institute of Islamic Thought member Abdur-Rahman Muhammad says he was at an IIIT meeting where they decided to begin using the term “Islamophobia” to “beat up their critics.” On December 4, 2006, AMSS sponsored a conference at the Brookings Institution titled, “Islamophobia: Its Rising Threat and Policy Challenges.”
