  • Federal and local investigators are examining whether Griffin J. John II, 16, who killed three students and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Ore., was radicalized online. Law enforcement sources said he appeared to have developed an obsession with Nazism and may have interacted on Discord with violent extremist networks, including 764, a nihilistic violent extremist group that exploits and manipulates children and vulnerable people.
  • Police said the teenager fired at a mechanic who confronted him outside the school before entering through a door after shooting its glass panels. He fired at least 15 shots inside a special-needs classroom, killing three boys, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher. A 7-year-old student and a special education staff member were injured. A teacher attempted to wrestle away his shotgun before a parent who pursued him into the building fatally shot him.
  • A law enforcement source confirmed that the shooter’s mother, Shauntai M. Nickerson, purchased the Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun as a birthday gift. Investigators searched her apartment and seized the teenager’s electronic devices to examine his online activity and determine a motive. Nickerson has cooperated with investigators and has not been charged. The FBI and local authorities are continuing their investigation.
