Michigan Democrats Nominate Candidate Who Praised Hezbollah for University of Michigan Board Seat

  • Dearborn attorney Amir Makled defeated Jewish incumbent Jordan Acker for the University of Michigan Board of Regents at the April 19, 2026, state Democratic convention in Detroit. Makled and Paul Brown advance to the November 2026 general election.
  • Makled, a trial lawyer who represented a 2024 anti-Israel encampment protester, campaigned on UMich divestment from Israel and had shared, then deleted, pro-Hezbollah and antisemitic tweets, according to reporting by the Detroit News.
  • Acker and Brown had backed disciplining anti-Israel activists and opposed divestment. Only Acker faced a challenge after his home was repeatedly targeted by activists in 2024.
