Maryland Man Pleads Guilty to Mailing Threatening Communications to Jewish Institutions

  • Clift Seferlis, a 55-year-old resident of Garrett Park, Md., pleaded guilty on November 18, 2025, in federal court to 17 counts of mailing threatening communications and eight counts of obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs, after sending over 40 letters and two postcards targeting more than 25 Jewish institutions across multiple states.
  • From March 2024 through June 2025, Seferlis’s mailings threatened to destroy buildings, injure or kill occupants, and use dangerous weapons, fire, or explosives against synagogues, Jewish museums, community centers, schools, non-profits, and even a delicatessen in locations including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland.
  • Seferlis is facing a maximum of 169 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $5.65 million fine, with sentencing set for March 16, 2026. Read More
