Stephen Spencer Pittman, 19, of Madison, Miss., was charged in a federal superseding indictment with civil rights and arson offenses related to the burning of Beth Israel Congregation and the Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life in Jackson.
Court documents allege Pittman used gasoline to set the fire during the early morning hours of Jan. 10, causing extensive damage and leaving the building unusable for an indefinite period.
He faces federal charges, including arson of property used in interstate commerce and damaging religious property. The FBI, ATF, Jackson Police Department, and Jackson Fire Department are investigating the case.
