ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA - AUGUST 28: People gather at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial for a candlelight vigil August 28, 2021 in Arlington, Virginia. The vigil is held in honor of the 13 U.S. service members who died in a suicide bombing outside Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. As evacuations at the Kabul airport edge toward completion, U.S. President Joe Biden warned the potential for another attack is highly likely. (Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images)
  • Sinmyah Amera Ceasar, a 30-year-old U.S. citizen from Brooklyn, was sentenced to 230 months (over 19 years) in prison for conspiring to provide material support to ISIS, obstructing justice, and failing to appear in court after attempting to flee the U.S.
  • Between January and November 2016, Ceasar, using the alias “Umm Nutella,” used numerous social media accounts to promote ISIS, disseminate propaganda, and recruit individuals in the U.S. to join and fight for ISIS abroad, establishing contacts with ISIS members overseas.
  • While on bail, Ceasar violated conditions by reconnecting with ISIS supporters, deleting over 1,000 electronic communications, and lying to authorities. She later fled to avoid sentencing, contacting an individual in Afghanistan for assistance after the 2021 Kabul airport bombing.
