DiNapoli highlights a significant increase in hate crimes across New York State, with a 69 percent surge since 2019, totaling 1,089 reported incidents in 2023. This marks the highest number of hate crimes since the state began mandating annual reporting under the Hate Crimes Act of 2000.
  • Jewish individuals were the most targeted group, accounting for 44 percent of all hate crimes in 2023, with 88 percent of religious-based hate crimes directed at Jewish victims. 
  • There was a notable increase in anti-Asian hate crimes during the height of the pandemic, though these numbers have since halved but remain significantly higher than pre-2019 levels.
