  • Hadi Matar, 24, is facing charges of attempted murder and assault after stabbing author Salman Rushdie, 75, at a literary event in New York.
  • Matar’s social media showed him to be sympathetic to “Shia extremism” and the causes of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC).
  • Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini issued an Islamic religious decree, known as a “fatwa,” demanding Rushdie’s death in 1989.
