  • Two New York lawyers, Urooj Rahman, 33, and Colinford Mattis, 34, pleaded guilty to new charges as part of a deal in which prosecutors recommended shorter sentences.
  • Rahman and Mattis were charged for throwing a Molotov cocktail at a New York City police car during protests over George Floyd’s death in May 2020 and faced up to 45 years in prison.
  • Under the revised agreements, the prosecutors recommended sentences of just 18 to 24 months.
  • Some have charged that the lighter sentences reflect a Justice Department policy that comes down harder on right-wing extremists such as the Capital Hill rioters than on left-wing extremists, such as these.
